MONSTER HIGH SCHOOL HOUSE #5
My niece was never into Barbie's, she, well 'we' always enjoyed playing with her
Polly Pocket's, ok ok, our Polly Pockets. I bought most of them from garage sales and thrift stores.
Then she started liking the Monster High dolls, got a few for Christmas last year, then she...asked me to build her a Monster High house...I was a little hesitant at first because who has the time, but I liked the challenge, plus she is my only niece and I just can't say no to her.
I have made houses before but they were Polly Pocket scale. This was much bigger...I was excited and scared. So I headed off to the Packaging company I get my cardboard from and picked out the size of my boxes. I didn't want to go too big, because that means more paper mache...more work...blah blah blah. So I decided on the 22 x 14 x 14". From there I drew out my plans. I knew this was actually going to happen, when I started glueing the boxes together, once my niece saw how it was going to look, she got more excited and now I really had to finish this thing. So for about eight weekends, mostly Sundays, I spent working on this house. Went to bed late and got up early. I was excited too, to see it finished.
I decided to change the house into a school house because to be honest, I didn't want to have to build a kitchen, I thought making desks was easier and less work, I loved making it but I really wanted to just get it done... I wish I took more pictures during the process...I wasn't really into YouTube.ing and did not know what the whole 'blog' thing was about...
Now I am loving all this, I love sharing what I do with cardboard and I am so thankful that you all enjoy it too. Thank you so much for all your comments, you inspire me. I want to make more...

DeleteAmazing work! I think I'd like to try something like this for my daughter. What type of cardboard did you use and where can it be purchased? It looks very heavy duty and I don't think I've seen it in Michael's.
ReplyDeleteI bought my cardboard box from a packaging company, moving company's also sell the boxes, it was about $2 for each 22x14x14 box... the packaging company is really kind and they let me go through their recycleable skids for scraps of cardboard, they are actually not scraps some pieces are 4'x4'...for free...look for a packaging company and ask if you could take some of their scraps... hope this helps :) avoid soft cardboard, the harder the better, thicker cardboard is better...

Pets, sounds like a good idea, some of the dolls have pets already, the ones that come in the package...I don't think the school allows outside pets...but we'll see...:)

DeleteI'm sending you pictures, I can't wait to show you them! I recieved a right hand injury on wednesday, but I'm so much better now and I actually did a lot of work on Katniss's home. The bed was made with hot glue sticks as the frame and brown fleece. The frame was a ginormous mistake because the glue sticks bent under my Liv's weight. Luckily I got pictures before it collapsed. I'll remake the bed with wooden skewers next time. Also, big wig change for Katniss Everdeen. I have pics of her before and after. District 8 had very thick wavy hair. Katniss, who the people who made the Liv dolls named Katie, had straight brown hair. Or it was supposed to be straight brown hair. It came in 2 braids and when I unbraided it the hair stuck out EVERYWHERE. I tucked the main piece of hair away into a little braid. So I was looking at the beautiful doll who I chose to be the Careers victim on the first night, District 8, and my eyes fell on that gorgeous wig. Since it's not really right to favor the girl from 8 more than Katniss, I switched the wigs. Plus Katniss looks stunning now. -Sophie

ReplyDeleteWow, thank you so much, you are so sweet...I'm taking more pictures today, there has been quite a few changes to the house since... plus I'll be doing another tutorial video on how to make it, I'm drawing out illustrations, because I didn't take that many pictures during the building process... kickin myself now ... its the houses one year anniversary this month... I finished it last Februray...

DeleteThis house really rocks! My partner and I are working on a project to build a Monster High house. This is our very first custom project and we're really excited about it. We're still calculating and drawing the "blueprints" and we're freaking out with how big will it be (3 feet tall more or less). We want to build it with thin wood instead of carboard (his father was a carpenter before he retired, so he could lend us a hand)but I'm thinking that if we put stairs, we'll make them with carboard, just like yours.

Thank you so much. Wow, sounds exciting, I can't wait to see it, I would love to post some pics of it too here on my blog when you're finished. I am also planning on building another project, a new dollhouse for the Monster High Dolls, I'm going to take everything I learned making this school house and make the next one better...just not sure which way to go... I would love to build it 2 homes in one, more like a townhouse or maybe 2 doll apartments, that way I can make one of the homes inside just using cardboard and the other would be more craft sticks...but it will probably be my last big project because I really don't have the room so it has to be fabulous. I can't wait to see your dollhouse, sounds like its going to be spectacular!

DeleteI'm also working on some Monster High themed printables for dolls, such as pizza boxes, shopping bags etc. As soon as I have them I'll send you a picture. I also want to upload them somewhere so people can print them for personal use.
